From the Mayors Office

The Mayor also proposed a program for enhanced training of fishermen with basic survival skills. Under this pilot program that would be jointly funded by NOAA and the city of New Bedford, crewmembers of vessels in New Bedford and Fairhaven would receive annual training and certification in basic survival skills at no cost to the crewmember. This training would be in addition to the current federally mandated monthly training drills. .One of the lessons learned as a result of this tragedy is that proper survival training is essential,. said Mayor Kalisz. Rodney Avila, a New Bedford boat owner and representative on the New England Fisheries Management Council applauded the mayor.s efforts in Washington. .This is a real plus for the fishing industry. The Mayor did a fabulous job and delivered so much more than we could have hoped for.. During the meeting, the Mayor and Dr. Hogarth discussed the need to continue open, frank and collaborative dialogue regarding the various regulatory issues facing the fishing industry. Dr Hogarth accepted the Mayor.s invitation to meet with the Mayor .s Seafood Industry Advisory Task Force in the coming weeks. .Our past participation as a Brownfield Showcase Community and a Port fields pilot has helped us to establish this cooperative relationship with NOAA,. said Mayor Kalisz. .
